The St Laurence’s Chapel provides a dedicated chapel space with a capacity of 300.
Sited on the eastern edge of the hilltop campus, its building form takes cues from the approach to European architects sited churches in the modest piazzas of small towns.
Passing under an emphatic abstracted cruciform bell tower, entry via a small vestibule gives way to a large single space rising toward a large glass screen beyond the altar. The screen obscures the rear of nearby buildings whilst softly lighting the interior.
The white exterior and interior form sits on a brick floor/base which responds to the context of the heritage buildings adjacent as well as metaphorically acknowledging the Gospel of Matthew where the “wise man builds his house on rock”.
