Telstra Tower has played a leading role in Canberra’s skyline for 40 years. After closing in 2021, the beloved icon will be redeveloped as a premier dining and cultural attraction.
The proposed design for the tower draws inspiration from the waters of Canberra. From the three rivers: the Cotter, Murrumbidgee, and Molonglo, to the mists that blanket the heights of Black Mountain and the sky country of Mulleun—the wedge-tailed eagle. Water gives life and energy; reflects life and light; and over time, shapes the land itself.
As well as reinvigorating the interiors of Telstra Tower, the project will activate the podium level with the placement of ‘river rock’ like structures that will host new First Nations-focused cultural, educational and dining activities amongst the treetop views of Black Mountain.
“High above the treetops, visitors will once again be able to experience an eagle’s eye view of the city and its surroundings from the tower’s own eyrie, where seating pods will provide shelter from the wind and mist.” – Sophie Cleland, Principal
The design will offer a revitalised experience that takes visitors from the Black Mountain canopy of stringy bark and scribbly gums to the panoramic views of the city, rivers and ranges.
