Project LAND 4502 provides the additional facilities and infrastructure required to support the acquired three (3) new CH-47F Chinook’s under LAND 4502 PHASE 1 to the 5 AVN REGT at RAAF Base Townsville.

The 5 AVN REGT Precinct is positioned within the “Operational Support Zone” and “Operational Zone” of RAAF Base Townsville. The development is situated on a brownfield site within the existing 5 AVN REGT Precinct at RAAF Base Townsville and provides new fit for purpose facilities to enhance the operational capability and supports functional requirements of the Unit’s existing facilities. The development is consistent with current use and the RAAF Base Townsville Zone Plan.

The preferred option developed for the two (2) Shelters consists of a long rectangular building and collocates the Supply Support function required by the LAND 4502 Project to the southern end of the facility.

The single storey building is orientated with a long axis in a north–south direction, to allow aircraft access via the extended aircraft apron area to the west. The building location considers suitable turning paths and clearances for the manoeuvring of the aircraft via tow-motor vehicle into the Shelter, and maintains the Flight Line to the north.

The functional areas of the building are divided into two zones: Individual fire compartments for each Shelter (with a higher roof) accessed via the aircraft apron from the west; and Associated plant areas and support zone (with a lower roof annex) accessed from the east. Plant areas requiring maintenance are accessible via a service road along the east side of the Shelters and Supply Building.

Site planning (including civil and services infrastructure) and building layouts developed for the LAND 4502 Project design consider future development and expansion opportunities.
