University of Adelaide HDR Student Hub
The Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Student Hub is a world-class, vibrant workspace for graduate researchers in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology (SET). In response to growing cohorts and the rise of flexible work, existing facilities were replanned and re-energised to support independent research and collaboration in an agile work environment, including spaces for study, meeting and relaxation.
The updated graduate office space increases flexibility, utilisation and collaboration opportunities in response to changing student numbers and requirements. With a mix of seating options including sit-stand desks, meeting rooms, and private booths, students can study in a way that suits them.
During our stakeholder engagement process, representatives from student groups raised acoustics as among their primary concerns. In response to this, the existing space was completely reclad in absorptive surfaces. With a materials referencing colours of the surrounding campus, a transitional colour gradient approach distinguishes active and quiet zones. This new acoustic arrangement supports a variety of working styles and collaborative activities without interference.
Our team aimed to improve the quality of the student experience by creating a space that inspires a sense of community. As a dedicated home for study and collaboration, the Hub gives SET researchers a feeling of belonging on campus. The space’s generous kitchen and collaborative area enable gatherings and socialisation, increasing connections among the cohort.
The University will use this project as a pilot model for other HDR cohorts on campus.
“Architectus, with their visionary approach to design and innovation, has seamlessly woven success into the fabric of the HDR Hub. Their architectural prowess has not only shaped spaces but also cultivated an environment where excellence and collaboration thrive, making the HDR Hub a testament to their enduring commitment to elevating the built landscape.”
