Port Moresby’s Harbour is one of the world’s truly great natural deepwater harbours. With a proud history of seafaring mariners and traders, Portside Gardens represents a defining pivot in linking Port Moresby’s origins with its optimistic future.

Positioned on the edge of Port Moresby Harbour, the Portside Gardens development by Kumul Consolidated Holdings is tasked with representing Papua New Guinean aspirations for a future that is proudly optimistic and distinctly Melanesian. The master plan delivers an appropriately scaled, tropical urban design and architectural response, supported by indigenous landscaping at all levels, from an activated public domain to suspended terrace gardens.

A destination precinct for generations to come.

Portside Gardens has the opportunity to provide a destination precinct that celebrates 21st Century Melanesian identity. The masterplan provides safe access to:

  • Multiple accommodation types inclusive of residential,
  • Commercial office,
  • Retail,
  • Hotel and leisure
  • Recreational marine and cultural activities,
  • Ferry access,
  • Commercial services for PNG’s economic development

These uses will be supported with significant urban activation at its ground and lower levels to rejuvenate the public domain with quality offerings for dining and retail.

Safety and accessibility

Establishing the right mix of the above functions, typologies and activities will stimulate public activation. Key to resolving the master plan is ensuring public safety and access with onsite car parking that is safely accessible and discretely organised so as not to detrimentally impact the street level experience of the public domain.

Connecting people and places

Architectus has worked closely with Kumul Consolidated Holdings and its advisors Ashton Brunswick, to advance a master plan that will positively develop Port Moresby’s future city potential and connect with multiple foreshore developments along the harbour’s edge into a successfully linked network of urban spaces.
