The brief for the Francis Rush Centre included a liturgical space, administration, street-front tenancies and two storey carpark, offering the opportunity to complete the St Stephen’s Cathedral Precinct.

A multi-layered strategy was adopted for siting a new building adjacent to the Cathedral. The existing exposed aggregate concrete plinth of the precinct is continued with street-front tenancies concealing the car park. Above this created plinth, the site is divided into a series of strips which reflects the linear nature of the existing precinct. These strips consist of copper (services), stone (private offices), glass (open offices), air (loggia) and ground (River of Stone) are layered in decreasing material density toward the Cathedral.
