Fire Station, Bureau of Meteorology (FSBOM) is a multipurpose facility to support the Base Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting capability and the Bureau of Meteorology functional requirements. The new building replaced the existing outdated facility that had to be displaced under the Battlefield Airlifter masterplan.
The Fire Station at RAAF Base Amberley is a 24/7 CAT 8 based service model supporting 53 permanent staff and 28 reservists. The Fire Station supports both aviation rescue and firefighting activities and on base structural firefighting, as well as providing support as required to operational activities and civil assistance requirements. The Bureau of Meteorology accommodates staff who provide meteorological support to RAAF Base Amberley flying activities.
The new facility was placed on a challenging site with airfield planning, OLS and environmental constraints that required specific dispensations to meet the functional expectations. The project was delivered as Stage 09 of the Battlefield Airlifter project under a MCC-1 2003 contract.
The facility comprises; working accommodation, training facilities, amenities, observation room, vehicle hangar, and loading and wash bays. The Fire Station is arranged to optimise response time and accommodates four stand-by engines. The offices, amenities and rest facilities are located adjacent to the engine bays under the third floor control room which has full vision of the airfield. The facility also includes an annex enclosure for servicing and maintenance of a further ten engines and complementary service vehicles.
The design team continued a close dialogue with the end user from project inception right through to final handover which was a key factor in the project’s success.
