Cultural plaza

A new plaza connects the expanded Gallery with the Royal Botanic Gardens, establishing a place to experience and engage with art, live performance and other events within landscaped outdoor spaces.

Art collection display

• The Gallery now has more than double the space for showcasing its collection to the public.
• It also creates a prominent new destination for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, with a larger dedicated space to showcase the Gallery’s internationally renowned collection.
• The new building features different types of spaces for new ways of thinking and new forms of art. These include the Tank, an adaptive re-use of a former Second World War fuel bunker; a column-free gallery for contemporary art; and a gallery for time-based art.

Temporary exhibitions

The project provides a second, larger state-of-the art gallery to attract a greater number of major national and international exhibitions to Sydney.

Lifelong learning

The gallery’s new learning venues include creative and learning studios with greater digital capabilities for online engagement with regional communities and other off-site audiences.

Social spaces

In addition to new dining options, there are new spaces for events and conference facilities for Gallery and commercial purposes – all with expansive views of Sydney Harbour and the Domain.

A sustainable art museum

The project incorporates the latest building and operational technology so the Gallery can achieve the maximum possible environmental and economic sustainability.

The gallery is the first public art museum in Australia to achieve a 6-star Green Star design rating.

Sustainability highlights include:

• 14,715 m2 of site retained and rehabilitated with landscape for public use
• 3,740 m2  of green roof and landscaped courtyards with Australian native species, with 2,192 m2 green roof featuring public art connected to Country
• 100% renewable energy powering the building
• 302kW photo-voltaic system atop the entry pavilion
• 95% of construction and demolition waste recycled
• 1200 m3 of concrete from existing oil tanks recycled for concrete mixes in new building

The concept

The concept responds to the extraordinary beauty of the site, with a series of pavilions reaching out to the Domain and Royal Botanic Gardens as they cascade towards Sydney Harbour and Woolloomooloo.

The subtle profile of the pavilions complements and preserves the dignity of the existing Gallery building, while creating new spaces that foster a sense of community, imagination and openness.

The project site

The Naala Badu building gives new life to an under-utilised site north of the existing Art Gallery of NSW.

Two grassed concrete platforms – one over the Cahill Expressway and the other over disused World War II oil tanks – help revitalise the city’s eastern cultural precinct.

By building to the north, the project preserves one of the two 19th-century facades, protects heritage trees, and retains the Domain’s much-used playing fields.
