The Second Building at Bradfield City Centre, designed by Architectus in collaboration with Aileen Sage Architects and Jacobs, spans over 18,000 square metres, including a 6,000 square metre basement. The design showcases a cutting-edge and culturally responsive vision for the home of the most innovative advanced manufacturing technology-ready spaces the country has seen.
Focused on enabling research and innovation, the new building in the AMRF precinct caters to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), featuring a high-bay advanced manufacturing hall, research laboratory space including two large scale open plan cleanrooms, seminar and collaboration spaces, and publicly accessible greenspace embracing an internal courtyard. It will also house industry-aligned and commercial tenants.
Stage two of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Facility (AMRF) will also be located in the Second Building. With a focus on micro-electronics and semi-conductor packaging, the AMRF will support manufacturing businesses to scale up and contribute to Western Sydney’s economic story.
The Second Building will be an exemplar of Industry 4.0 through the unrivalled combination of functions in a single facility to kick-start an innovation powerhouse of advanced manufacturing in the Bradfield City Centre.
Second Building departs from the typical industrial shed-like typology where the functions are siloed in separate buildings; the design ambition for the new facility prioritises its civic role. The architectural design has evolved from the site’s cultural and environmental context influencing both the building form, spatial organisation, and material choices, with the design team working closely with First Nations spatial design practice, Bangawarra
Inspired by Aboriginal dilly bags and weaving techniques, the façade introduces a layered and transparent quality to shading materials, allowing key views into, across, and through the building and landscape spaces. Patternation will provide scaling and influenced by the language of surrounding geology, local Aboriginal peoples living, and cultural knowledge.
A strong link to outdoor communal spaces enables seamless transitions throughout, featuring multiple entry points catering to public and private employees and accommodating various security levels. The public areas feature a mass timber structure, adding warmth and connection to the parkland while the masonry grounds the building, a reference to Bringelly Shale. An internal shaded courtyard, designed by Tyrrell Studio, will serve as a gathering space and refuge from Western Sydney’s heat, offering respite for occupants and the broader community.
Second Building is designed to meet Net Zero Operational Carbon and achieve a 5-Star Green Star rating. The facility aims to integrate sustainable features, including a hybrid mass timber and low-carbon concrete structure with a bio-solar roof. Other energy-efficient strategies include natural ventilation, water conservation systems and solar shading.
These thoughtfully designed spaces contribute to the overall synergy of the facility, providing an ideal setting for ground-breaking research and development centred on occupant wellbeing.
Second Building will contribute to Western Sydney’s economic story and be a catalyst of growth for emerging industries in NSW.
