Prime Minister Anthony Albanese officially opens Flinders University’s Health and Medical Research Building

Architectus and its client and collaborators are celebrating the completion of Flinders University Health and Medical Research Building (HMRB), an expansive, world-class facility on Flinders University’s Bedford Park campus. The project is a pioneer for Australia’s laboratory design benchmark, impacting the working conditions of our critical research communities.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Peter Malinauskas joined Flinders University President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Stirling in opening the HMRB.

Mr Albanese said the facility will be changing lives for the better for generations to come.

“I’m incredibly excited to see history being made at the HMRB – whether it’s better understanding neural pathways to control chronic pain, unravelling the secrets in our DNA to address debilitating genetic conditions, supporting the health of mothers and babies – there are endless possibilities to what the 600 researchers here will be able to achieve.”

– Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon Anthony Albanese MP

Our education team and practice leaders gathered alongside Flinders University’s staff, stakeholders, and the wider community to mark the occasion.

Principal, Andrew Schunke, expressed our pride and a huge sense of achievement in delivering this once-in-a-generation project that places the healthcare and research community at the centre to transform how we understand, diagnose and treat illness.

“After five years of intensive and rewarding collaboration, we are immensely proud of the Health and Medical Research Building at Flinders University and its opportunity to make a lasting impact in the lives of not just South Australians but throughout Australia and worldwide.”

Heralding a new era of medical research and innovation for the institution, the HMRB houses state-of-the-art wet and dry research laboratories, workspaces, seminar rooms and amenities within a 22,000-square-metre building designed to compete internationally and Connect with Country.

Alan J Duffy, Principal and project design lead, adds:

“As a health and medical research building, the design intent was always to connect the researchers with nature where possible. When Uncle Lewis said follow the lines of the rainbow sands, the design response was clear – the building should strive to connect land, water and sky, in its form, material and outlook”.

“It stands as a tribute to the groundbreaking research that will take place within its walls.”

Diana Rosenthal, Principal and project interior design and stakeholder engagement lead
