As exemplars of public spaces that are both transitional and a destination, these two retail tenancies activate and welcome arriving and departing visitors and residents to the Townsville Airport.

The natural beauty of Northern Queensland is a strong tourist incentive and a fitting design reference to welcome people to Townsville and beyond. The guiding design principles resonate with the local context and bring the natural beauty of the outdoors inside.

Borrowing colours and textures from beloved Castle Hill, Magnetic Island and its surrounds, these new retail tenancies activate what is usually deemed as a mere transitional space into a marker that celebrates arrival and departure, a place to gather, and ultimately a space to feel welcomed and at home.

The design incorporates elements from the outdoors; timber finishes, a colour palette that references nature and verdant indoor planting. Engaging with the existing conditions and in conjunction with the airport upgrades and rebrand, the tenancies achieve;

  • A colour story that is natural and muted in tone, referencing the existing airport look and feel.
  • A visual connection to its existing surrounds, spatial demarcations were designed using half-height joinery pieces that then made use of soft landscaping and timber elements.

Various seating arrangements to accommodate different uses in a public, transitional space.
