An elegant, tiered, and climatically responsive building, St Thomas of Villanova’s four-storey Learning Centre is the completed Stage 1 of the school’s 2018–2027 master plan delivered by Architectus.
The design places a strong emphasis on connections between indoor spaces and generous outdoor verandas, which in Brisbane’s subtropical climate can be used by class groups as an alternative classroom space throughout the year. A dramatic sheltering roof overhangs these verandas and a memorable element of the design.
The tiered building design responds to the site’s topography and captures views of playing fields and the Brisbane CBD beyond. It reflects the strategy outlined in the master plan, which will see the campus reorganised around a grand central space.
The lower three storeys have been designed to accommodate a co-teaching pedagogy that facilitates self-directed learning. An arrangement of flexible and inspiring spaces can be used for collaborative, self-directed, and instructive learning.
Senior school students and staff occupy the fourth storey consisting of classrooms, an auditorium, and indoor/outdoor study areas. At this level the new building connects to existing senior areas of the school to define a Senior School Precinct.
