A fundamental upgrade for the city of Brisbane, the much-anticipated redevelopment of the Roma Street Station Precinct involved the challenging task of relocating the Roma Street Coach Terminal.

With the new terminal to perform as Brisbane’s transport ‘gateway’ for the next decade, it was crucial that the design of the facility remained economical, functional, and of the highest quality.

The site location, sitting significantly lower than the main pedestrian circle on the Parkland Boulevard, challenged designers to establish an identifiable facility that linked the parklands through to Roma Street and the wider CBD.

Simplistic by nature to compliment the surrounding parklands and adhere to Brisbane’s subtropical environment, the Roma Street Temporary Coach Terminal comprises of a single skillion roof using a combination of steel, translucent roof sheeting and lantern parapet walls to provide shelter to the platform.

What is now an iconic landmark of the Brisbane CBD that can be seen from the nearby Parkland Boulevard, the design of the terminal’s main entrance included a lantern element that serves as a marker for identification and wayfinding.

With commuter comfort and convenience at the forefront of the design, freestanding pavilion structures were included to home various amenities and additional ticketing offices.

The terminal design and the materials used to provide opportunities for adaptive and sustainable reuse of the facility should there be a need for a flexible communal gathering space in the future.
