Architectus, in partnership with Silvester Fuller, Tyrrell Studio and Hoyne, was engaged by NSW Land and Housing Corporation to prepare a master plan and new planning controls for 600-660 Elizabeth Street, Redfern.
The 1.1 ha site, located opposite Redfern Park, is a State Significant Precinct (SSP) and a key project in the NSW Government’s Communities Plus Program – the largest social and affordable building program in the country.
It is also the NSW Government’s first build-to-rent mixed tenure housing project, presenting an alternative way to deliver new social housing.
The project will facilitate the delivery of new social housing on the site, with up to 30% social housing and 5-10% affordable housing, with the balance to be provided as private build-to-rent housing.
Architectus, Silvester Fuller, Tyrrell Studio and Hoyne have come together as integrated design and planning team for this project.
The design team’s approach focuses on the site’s strategic connections, and amenity provided by its location adjacent to Redfern Park, with the aim to deliver a responsive design that fits with the neighbourhood and delivers a truly integrated mixed tenure community on the site.
A critical part of the project will be consultation with the community and key stakeholders This will inform the development of the master plan, and preparation of a comprehensive SSP rezoning proposal, including new planning controls and a site-specific DCP, to be submitted to theDepartment of Planning and Environment for assessment later this year.
