Integrated gardens and green spaces are defining features of Queensland Children’s Hospital, a project that has earned widespread acclaim from respected bodies such as the International Academy for Design and Health, which called it a world leader in healthcare design.
The nature-oriented design of the public and outdoor spaces is inspired by the hospital’s subtropical context and informed by evidence-based findings on the therapeutic and sustainability value of integrated gardens.
The spaces appeal to all the senses and respond to the needs of patients, families, and hospital staff. Together, they help reduce stress and anxiety, creating a place for rehabilitation, retreat, and contemplation.
The natural environment is expressed in innovative ways:
-A plaza and over-sized grass mound invite exploration
-Green monoliths replace trees on roof gardens
-Columns of flowering and tropical plants create a ‘Jungle Garden’
-A secret garden offers views of the city
-An adventure garden hosts events and exercise programs, and
-A relaxation garden offers respite for staff.
