Our Landscape Architecture team is proud to play a part in the 50-year-long journey to transform the Pemulwuy Precinct.

We designed the public domain and landscape rooftops for the new mixed-use development. It’s located on ‘The Block’ in the inner-city Sydney suburb of Redfern, a site with unique significance to the Aboriginal community.

Our brief was to develop a design acknowledging the area’s cultural and social heritage while also reflecting contemporary Aboriginal experiences.

The Pemulwuy Project has transformed the 12,000sqm site owned by the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC) into a mixture of affordable housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, a gymnasium, commercial and retail space, a gallery, student accommodation, and a childcare centre.

Public art and symbolic representations of Aboriginal history and culture are a crucial part of the project – elements that will help create a sense of meaning, identity, and community.

With connections to land and sky as well as people and culture, public art in the precinct was evolved in collaboration with the AHC and local artists, ensuring the precinct is infused with a ‘spirit of place’.
