The Newcastle Station Redevelopment and new public realm interface has been developed as part of the Newcastle Urban Transformation and Transport Program (NUTTP), known as “Revitalising Newcastle”.

Using an interpretative design to link Indigenous and non-Indigenous histories, a masterplan was created which focused on landscape to strengthen connections between the city and waterfront. A new urban plaza and amenities were incorporated into the heritage precinct to provide activated multi-use spaces which are public orientated, fun and community driven.

Layers of historical interpretation, including shell middens, shoreline, industry and rail, were weaved into the design to celebrate and reconnect to the rich heritage and context of the site. A misting system evokes the historical connection to industry and rail, and was thoughtfully designed to utilise local sea breezes to cool the plaza, while also acting as an invitation to play and create anticipation and wonder.

Heritage station buildings were preserved and activated to create economic opportunities and revitalise the city centre.

The Newcastle Station Redevelopment is successful example of urban placemaking that preserves, enhances and celebrates heritage and culture.
