One of three ‘shared space’ projects recently completed within Auckland’s CBD, Lorne Street Shared Space has created a new open space destination adjacent Auckland’s Central City Library and a new focal point for pedestrians and events within the city’s Creative Quarter.

The key objectives of this project are to reinforce the prominence of the library as one of the city’s key cultural destinations and to create a new public open space supporting the library and Cultural Precinct as a gathering and social space. The removal of an existing raised terrace and balustrade connects the street, new stairs and library entry in a unifying and continuous urban surface.

The creation of shared space and pedestrian priority in Lorne Street reinforces the north-south connections between the CBD’s Old Town (Fort St, High St and Vulcan Lane) and Learning Quarter (AUT and Auckland University).

The design is also future proofed to accommodate the anticipated re-use of the adjacent St James Theatre as a significant entertainment venue.

The design principles of the ‘shared space’ have been developed through extensive discussion, research and collaboration with Auckland City, Boffa Miskell, international experts and the review of international exemplar projects.

The second phase of this project extends the shared space treatment along Lorne Street to the AUT campus and upgrades the east-west link between the Library and Aotea Square via Rutland Street.
