Situated at the heart of Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, the 1.2 hectare Aquatic Centre and Gym is a vital destination responding to the university’s masterplan vision.

The project’s overarching aim was the creation of a new hub that integrates and enlivens under-used areas of the campus while also improving social spaces to support contemporary learning, performance, and interaction. Another key driver was the formation of a new pedestrian-friendly street and spaces with a sub-tropical landscape and ample shade.

Our design leverages the pedestrian-focused vista of University Drive to enhance the arrival experience for users of both the sporting facility and academic buildings on campus.

The project features a rooftop native garden pavilion and landscaped entry to the sporting precinct site. It also incorporates an Olympic swimming pool, terrace lawn, terrace seating stairs and gym. All the elements are in sync with the existing context, together creating an active streetscape and generous public spaces.
