In 2017 Architectus was engaged by Auckland Airport as part of a consortium to progress the Terminal Development Plan.

The Plan identified a number of priority anchor projects: a new International Arrivals facility, an Integrated Check-in, the Domestic Jet Hub, refurbishment of Pier A, and new parking facilities within a landscaped Forecourt. Combined, these projects significantly transform the arrivals and departures customer experience, provide additional operational capacity and efficiencies, and respond to new regulatory requirements and technologies.

The Arrivals facility included space for border agencies, logistics areas and an Arrivals Hall designed to amplify the emotional experience of arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand – a celebration of homecoming and manaakitanga.

The Domestic Jet Hub was to be integrated with the existing International Terminal to provide additional capacity and significantly improve connectivity for passengers transferring between domestic and international services.

To support the Terminal expansion, a new Forecourt was proposed to transform the area currently dominated by carparking into a series of public spaces offering outdoor spaces to dwell and connections with the unique landscapes and cultural history of the Manukau.

Through a cohesive architectural approach and engagement with mana whenua, the TDP projects were designed to provide a legible and memorable experience for passengers and a new identity for Auckland Airport that is based on a sense of place and the local culture of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

Having completed design development to various levels, the Plan was put on hold due to the pandemic.
