Architectus was initially engaged by Auckland Airport as part of a consortium to progress the airport’s Terminal Development Plan. Having completed design development for various elements, the Plan was put on hold due to the pandemic. As part of the airport’s post Covid re-set, Architectus was commissioned with Beca to undertake a number of Work Packages of the Terminal Integration Enabling (TIE) framework that will deliver an integrated terminal.

Work Package 1 is a critical enabler for Terminal Integration and the Domestic Processor project. It consists of a Baggage Hall at ground with two levels of shell and core above, including double height glazing to the airfield, designed in anticipation of the proposed eastward expansion. Open floor plates and new consolidated services infrastructure facilitate the future fitout of passenger dwell and lounge areas at Level 1 and Level 2 respectively. The project is designed to be constructed in stages to allow existing baggage systems and back of house facilities to continue to operate. Construction of WP1 commenced in November 2022.

Work Package 2 consists of a new Joint Border Agency Hall and International Arrivals Hall refurbishments delivering increased passenger processing capacity for arrivals and a refreshed guest experience.

With reduced passenger volumes, construction is underway within the existing terminal footprint and the facility will be handed over in a staged manner as demand increases – all while maintaining operation of adjacent spaces.

Working with the constraints of the existing terminal structure, the Joint Border Agency Hall features a central volume over baggage scanners with a “halo” bulkhead to the perimeter providing a clutter free space with clear sightlines. New office spaces for MPI and Customs and airport logistics areas are also included along with external civil works and parking. Materials selected have warm and welcoming tones to counter a moment in the arrivals journey that can be stressful for many travellers. The design celebrates the arrivals journey and seeks to amplify the emotional experience of arriving in Aotearoa New Zealand – a celebration of homecoming and manaakitanga.

Work Package 3, the Integrated Check-in facility, consists of the expansion and redevelopment of the existing international check-in facility and the implementation of automated check-in technologies such as self-service check-in kiosks (SSK) and automatic bag drops (ABD) to improve efficiency, reduce congestion and provide an enhanced passenger experience. With the migration of the domestic jet capacity to the integrated terminal, the facility will cater to significantly greater passenger volumes. The programme includes critical departure-related retail functions, amenities and services required to support the needs of guests through each stage of the check-in and landside departure journey.
