The Clendon Centre
The Clendon Centre is a new learning and home base for Loreto Toorak’s Years 7 to 9 students.
Designed to maximise Loreto’s development opportunity within a very restrictive physical context, the building’s form and materiality also respect the physical and visual integrity of the school’s historic setting. The form – the outcome of our rigorous investigation of its function and setting – is an example of ‘Contextual Modernism’.
Inside the building we evoked a sense of calm through a minimal material palette of timber, concrete and glass, and we designed for acoustic performance that will support learning outcomes.
Scale, proportion, connection and materiality define the building’s overall spatial quality. Staggered, double-height volumes create space for larger social settings and provide vertical connections throughout the building.
We enclosed classrooms but also established smaller spaces for smaller tasks. Good visibility in the building offers not just safety and security but also helps students foster a sense of connection to each other, to place and to the passage of time.

St Andrew’s Exchange
A new shared development between St Andrew’s Parish and Tennis Club and the independent, all-boys Brighton Grammar School, the concept of reciprocity is at the heart of the project. We wanted to create a place for sharing values and beliefs, for gaining and communicating knowledge, and for engaging with people, ideas, and culture.
The building and landscape design bring together the communities of St Andrew’s Church and Brighton Grammar, creating physical connections between their areas of focus in worship, education, and recreation. The new building will strengthen ties to the site and local area and allow boys to experience the creative arts, science, design, and technology in new ways.
