Construction commences on a new National Herbarium of NSW

New National Herbarium of NSW now under construction

Major works have commenced on a new National Herbarium of NSW, after NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces the Hon. Rob Stokes, NSW Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney the Hon. Stuart Ayres, Botanic Gardens Greater Sydney Chief Executive Denise Ora and the local member for Camden Mr Peter Sidgreaves MP marked the commencement of construction at a sod-turning ceremony at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan last week during National Science Week.

Designed through a collaboration between Architectus, architect, Richard Leplastrier and landscape architect, Craig Burton, and in conjunction with FDC Construction and Fit Out, the Herbarium will house a growing collection of over 1.4 million botanic specimens, which are essential for informing and making decisions about the conservation and management of our natural environment

Architectus Principal Luke Johnson said, “It’s a privilege to work with the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust on this environmentally significant project. Plants are central to our planet’s habitability and sustainability, and the research and visitor interaction with the new Herbarium’s extensive plant collection will facilitate positive environmental and societal outcomes for generations to come.”

Construction on the Herbarium is expected to be completed by 2021.
