West Moreton Health needed new facilities to deliver care in a fast-growing region of Queensland. Located in Ripley, our Health team has delivered a new three storey facility, with an additional 90 beds to expand the capacity of the health system. Three patient wards were designed for this site – Rehabilitation, Older Persons Services and Palliative Care – in additio to outpatient therapy services.

Context responsive design
The design process navigated a technically challenging site. Spaces within the building are arranged to create clear site lines and connections towards distant mountains while the building form and material palette references domestic surroundings and the landscapes of the White Rock Mountain Ranges. The entry space offers generous outdoor shelter for public respite.

Integrated health care
The new building had to integrate closely with the existing Ripley Satellite Health Centre next door (also designed by Architectus) in order to operate as a single unified health campus. Since its opening, the existing Satellite Health Centre has already realised tangible benefits of care closer to the community and relief for major hospitals; this project, the new Specialised Inpatient Services seeks to enlarge these benefits with additional and crucial health services.

“Within the first 6 months of opening, Ripley Satellite Health Centre has seen more than 13800 presentations to its Minor Injuries and Illnesses Clinic, each patient being one less person in line for overloaded emergency departments. The new Specialised Inpatient Services build upon this relief for major hospitals by combining additional non-critical inpatient services with the Satellite Health Centre.” – Jeffrey Zheng, project lead
