Architectus has reimagined a 1930s heritage-listed building in Sydney, transforming it into a state-of-the-art headquarters for Q-CTRL – the first standalone quantum technology facility in Australia.

Heritage meets innovation

Originally an automotive and industrial parts factory, the revitalised building is a unique blend of old and new, with historical elements juxtaposed against contemporary design and cutting-edge technology.

“The design sensitively interweaves high-performance research environments and flexible, collaborative workplace settings to reveal and accentuate the building’s heritage features and provide an environment that will inspire the innovation Q-CTRL will bring to shape quantum technology.”

Architectus Principal, Robert Ousey

The 1,100-square-metre facility houses office spaces, precision research labs, communal areas, and team meeting rooms, creating an environment that supports both innovation and collaboration.

New needle-shaped columns have been introduced to reinforce the historic bow-sprung-truss roof and support new rooftop solar infrastructure.

Suspended timber boxes mark the labs, celebrating the existing historical columns of the building with mirrored walls visually expanding the space and showcasing the heritage building structure.

The connection of the new stair to the old and the preservation of the historical mosaic tile on the landing, further celebrate the building’s history.

Enhancing the human experience

Natural elements including a six-metre-tall moss-fern green wall and custom timber joinery soften the interior and emphasise the human experience alongside precision environmental control.

The design embraces natural ventilation and views to the adjacent centenary trees in workspaces, connecting the building with its surroundings and providing an uplifting natural backdrop.

Precision and stability

Harnessing the building’s heavy-industry past and structural design, including its exaggerated slab thickness, slab-on-grade construction, and expansive column capitals, the design team has delivered an ultra-stable environment for precision quantum measurements, highlighting the seamless integration of historical infrastructure with modern technology.
