Macquarie University MAZE is a temporary staff and student hub, transformed from 6000 m2 of space within the university’s building C7A.

Incorporating the conversion of the original campus library and levels 3, 4 and 5, the project, designed to last approximately 5 years, provided an opportunity to expand and challenge current paradigms for student and staff environments, and to take occupants out of their comfort zones with new ways of working and interacting.

Building on the success of Baseline and MUSE on floors below, level 3 of MAZE provides a highly interactive space for student groups with informal zones including open lounges, café style spaces, whimsically themed environments, workshop / brainstorm / support areas, event space, seminar and private rooms. Built space has been avoided where possible with zones defined by meeting pods of coloured glass, modular furniture and reusable ceiling panels.

On level 4, administration teams are co-located in a completely open environment with secondary breakout spaces positioned between groups, providing an acoustic buffer and opportunity for staff to come together. Workspaces are easily reconfigured to reflect staff desking preferences and changing needs of teams. Meeting and outdoor spaces are provided for staff at level 5 which includes terrace and barbeque to promote social interaction.

Macquarie University MAZE is the first phase in a sequence of projects designed by Architectus set to transform the Central Courtyard precinct at Macquarie University.

Macquarie University MAZE

“A fascinating experimental project supporting lived student culture and the university experience. Taking the modern hubs, work and collaboration spaces and reworking these into a living laboratory; a testing ground for new ideas in working and learning. The concept, direction and delivery excites in every facet while providing a great experience for every user; MAZE is a refreshing antidote to generic university spaces.”
