The Art Gallery of New South Wales Sydney Modern building, designed by SANAA with Architectus as Executive Architects, has received two prestigious awards at the 2023 Australian Interior Design Awards.
The project, considered by some as the most significant cultural addition to an Australian city in over 50 years, has been recognised for its outstanding interior design excellence nationally and internationally.
The Public Design category and the Best of State for Commercial Design Awards celebrate the project’s transformative vision for the Art Gallery of NSW. By seamlessly integrating art, architecture, and landscape, the design has created a unique art museum experience for Sydney.
The esteemed award jury commended the project, stating, “The combination of interlocking 3D voids and the white glowing spiral stair that carries visitors down to the extraordinary Oil Tank gallery is very strong in its resolve. Its materiality is gorgeous, expressed through the folded ground plane and lightweight tent-like structure above, which together deliver an enticing cross-section. One of the most exciting things about this project is its large, generous city-scale interiors and their visual connection to the city itself. Overall, it’s an absolutely delightful interior that serves as a consequence of its formal resolution.”
