The Cockburn Aquatic + Recreation Centre brings together elite sport, community and educational facilities in one award-winning destination.
The project, located in a largely greenfield community of Perth, required extensive consultation.
We worked with a diverse stakeholder group including the City of Cockburn, the Fremantle Football Club and Curtin University to identify opportunities for spatial efficiency via shared use.
Inspired by Country’s wetlands and waterholes
Our design for the facility is heavily influenced by the area’s Beeliar network of wetlands and waterholes.
For thousands of years these have been gathering places for indigenous family groups, playing a significant role in forming the local culture and identity. These natural forms and this cultural role shaped the design response.
The planning and relationships of spaces address the experiential ideas of the waterhole as a natural gathering place of recreation and community, where all ages can interact in close proximity, watching and learning from one another.
A civic ‘street’ tying the precinct together
A key design feature is the internal ‘street’ connecting the northern and southern ends of the precinct. It allows the public to navigate to and interact with all functions of the building from a central space.
The civic nature of the building is accentuated by a triple height volume. Together with great natural daylight and high quality materials, this feature creates the feeling of a public square for everyone to gather.
Eight pools of all varieties
Aquatics is a major drawcard of the complex. It incorporates eight pools including a 10-lane outdoor swimming and water polo pool, a 25-metre indoor pool, a warm water program pool, and leisure and recovery pools.
Three large-scale water slides establish a striking identity, creating a landmark for locals.
