The Brisbane Magistrates Court reimagines the traditional justice building as an inclusive, accessible, and dynamic urban space. Designed by Architectus Conrad Gargett in association with Cox Architecture, the Court departs from the typical, monumental form of justice buildings and takes on a triangular geometric structure to fosters transparency and engagement with the surrounding city.
Positioned to maximise interaction with the Parklands, the building’s interior is oriented towards public space, offering open vistas and inviting natural light. Art is integrated throughout the building, enhancing its cultural accessibility and enriching the visitor experience.
The building’s form and material palette were shaped by biophilia and collaborating artists. The interplay of large-scale elements, such as roofs and sunscreens, with smaller details like seating and façade patterns creates a harmonious and welcoming environment, further enhancing accessibility.
The design of the Brisbane Magistrates Court serves as a model for justice buildings that are not only functional but also civic and socially responsible.
