Architectus was lead consultant on the concept master plan for the Dedicated Cargo Area (DCA) and the adjacent Northern Roads – Business District Lands precinct associated with the new Western Sydney International Airport.
The airport is due to open for business in 2026, generating significant economic activity in the Western Sydney region.
Unlike the Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport in Mascot, this new development will be curfew-free, with international, domestic and freight services around the clock.
Located between the first and second runways on the western portion of the site, the DCA will deliver a market-led, scalable and secure aviation logistics environment.
The project also optimises development potential so the site can house air cargo, logistics, support and commercial functions.
Importantly, the DCA’s logistics elements will be adaptable to respond to future technological advances in aviation cargo processing.
A future-proofed development
Responding to trends within the cargo industry, the facility will accommodate the freight volume forecast to move through the airport. Its future-proofed layout will meet market and capacity demands as the precinct expands on this strategic greenfield site.
Linked to the 24-hour airport and centred around new business development within the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, it will be a high-performance model of logistical efficiency and aviation excellence.
A key requirement is to maximise the available space onsite for cargo processing, working within the prescribed height and spatial constraints at the end of a runway.
Large lots will be located off the Northern Road, the bypass connecting Windsor and Campbelltown.
Excellent truck access and visibility provide the opportunity to digitally transform cargo operations in Australia by linking aircraft, cargo and vehicle movements. This will lead to seamless transition between airside to landside and minimise wait times throughout the process.
Focusing on safety and security
With safety as a key focus, the design will allow for efficient traffic flow, segregating light
and heavy vehicles and protecting pedestrians via raised walkways linking cargo facilities and central support facilities.
To make the DCA an appealing workplace, the site includes a convenient multi-storey car park as well as a café and open green space.
In addition to create comfortable spaces for people to work, the buildings will be designed to conserve energy. Features include on-site power generation, water-catching recycling, and skylights to minimise the need for artificial lighting.
