As the Melbourne Metro Tunnel and other works expand the city’s rail system, West Footscray Station was expected to serve an increasing number of travelers.
The station needed an additional platform and other infrastructure to keep pace with demand and to help passengers navigate the site safely and smoothly.
The Rail team at Architectus delivered architectural upgrades at West Footscray including a new entry point, modifications to platforms, and a new platform alongside changes to the over-bridge extending the existing concourse.
The project is part of a larger body of work our team is doing across the growing network, including new infrastructure such as the Sunshine Signal Control Centre.
A cohesive solution with subtle differences
The new fully-enclosed and larger concourse includes fare validation services, new stairs, a lift and a ramp to access to platforms.
Our design respects the existing architectural language and identity of the station, which was rebuilt as part of part of Victoria’s Regional Rail Link.
At the same time, we made an intentional decision to express the differences between built forms over time by selecting a lighter palette of materials for the elements being introduced to the environment.
