The Women’s College is a place where women from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds come together and live in an encouraging, supported and relaxed environment whilst undertaking their various fields of academic pursuit at the University of Queensland (UQ), St Lucia campus.
Situated in the south-east corner of the UQ grounds, the college sits in a leafy environment between the UQ Lake and Brisbane River. The most common types of flora in the area are Jacarandas, large gums and conifers.
The project includes the development of a new wing comprised of 50 dormitories (including 2 ensuite and 3 PWD rooms) with a new residence for the head of college, as well as a new seminar room, link between wings and landscaping throughout.
The design intent has been to create a seamless addition to the college that provides visual and functional continuity; not a piece of architecture that is incompatible with the existing building fabric.
Paramount to the college is that the new facility is secure, functional and homely with a connection to landscape and views to the rest of the campus. High-quality social spaces that are connected with the lush landscaped grounds will provide important staff and student amenity.
