Our concept for a landmark student accommodation development creates a strong sense of community while also making genuine connections to Country.

The proposed development’s diverse living options are designed to meet the evolving needs of today’s students. All residential spaces are organised around a naturally ventilated corridor, creating a healthy, sustainable environment that makes the most of Newcastle’s temperate climate.

The ground level will be a hub of activity, featuring social, cooking, dining and recreational spaces, including a dedicated music room. Designed to foster well-being and inclusivity, the accommodation will become a ‘home away from home’ for the students.

Our approach is grounded in five key design principles:

A Country-connected place
The design acts as a living space for sharing knowledge and stories, with Country as its foundation. Drawing on the cultural landscapes of the region, the building and spaces incorporate elements of saltwater and freshwater as well as local flora and fauna. The aim is to ensure that Indigenous students, staff, and the wider community feel culturally safe and welcome.

An urban marker tied to its context
The development will serve as a distinctive, widely visible architectural anchor for the southwestern corner of the City Campus Honeysuckle site. It’s designed to reflect the area’s rich architectural, industrial, and Indigenous heritage, with materials that are attractive and long-lasting to ensure the building remains a vital part of the urban fabric for years to come.

An active ground plane
The building’s communal, student-centred spaces will enliven this important ‘spine’ for the campus, creating opportunities for students to gather, study, or socialise. At the eastern edge of the site, a historic railway turntable will be transformed into a landscaped plaza, connecting the past with the present.

A home away from home
The student experience is at the heart of the design, from top to bottom. The building’s communal facilities will foster a sense of belonging, connection and comfort, like a home away from home. Close to Newcastle’s waterfront and nightlife venues, it will become a vibrant place that’s fully connected to the city.

An environmentally sustainable design
Committed to a 5-Star Green Star rating, the building features a ‘fabric-first’ design. This will ensure it minimises heat gain and optimises natural light to improve the liveability of residential spaces.  Lush greenery and sustainable building practices will enhance biophilic benefits.
