Our design team has helped transform the former Townsville Sports Reserve into a vibrant new precinct featuring three indoor multi-purpose courts, an indoor rock-climbing wall, accessible change rooms and amenities, and a gym and administration facilities.
Informed by valuable stakeholder engagement, our responsive master plan for the site and welcoming, human-centred architecture has resulted in a sports hub that fulfils the client’s aspirations for the project and brings the community together.
Reviving older facilities + introducing new spaces
Existing synthetic athletics track, playing fields, conference facilities and grandstand on the site were thoughtfully retained and upgraded while new additions such as the multi-use courts and associated facilities expand options for all kind of new activities.
Our response for the precinct also enlivens a previously under-used portion of the site while preserving valuable green space. We also introduced a permeable street through the facility with breezeway access, allowing people to easily reach the hub from both the northeast and the south.
Architecture with a sense of place
The building’s form and angle take their cues from Townsville’s iconic Castle Hill, a giant granite monolith located immediately south.
Metallic, coloured steel cladding wrapped around the sports complex adds visual interest, with the undulating façade creating shadow and depth as the sun moves across its surface.
In addition to master planning and architecture, our practice contributed to the precinct’s eye-catching wayfinding solutions.
