Victoria has 13 Specialist Family Violence Courts (SFVCs) at its headquarter courts across the state. Designed for the physical and emotional safety of affected families, these courts have additional facilities including safe waiting areas and separate entrances, specialist staff and supports.
Our Public sector is contributing to four of these important projects in Shepparton, Broadmeadows and Geelong as well as Sunshine.
The expanded Sunshine Law Courts include family violence infrastructure designed to deliver services effectively while improving the public experience.
The project began with a comprehensive master plan for new facilities within the existing building’s footprint. This includes new and refurbished courtrooms, an expanded workplace and the safe waiting area where parties can wait and meet with legal services and specialist supports.
A collaborative design process
Our design solution for the Sunshine site reflects in-depth engagement with the judiciary, registry, security personnel, and specialist service providers to meet the needs of all stakeholders.
The architecture encapsulates a therapeutic approach to justice, with natural materials helping to create calming, welcoming spaces. Ample natural light and views to landscape add to a positive and productive environment for staff and communities.
Seamless, safer connections
The building includes a transparent yet still secure public entry. This entrance connects to the surrounding suburban context while respecting the existing building’s fabric and form.
Improved connectivity between the building’s two floors helps occupants navigate more easily and streamlines workflows for the SFVC.
Ultimately, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can contribute to a more secure, supportive environment for people experiencing and working within our justice system.
