Architectus is working with the Suburban Rail Loop Authority (SRLA), Aurecon, and Jacobs and Mott McDonald (AJM) on the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) to develop the concept design and business case for stage 1 of the project.
This project marks the first tier of a major expansion and reshaping of Melbourne’s suburban public transport network. SRL will run through Melbourne’s suburbs, improving local access to public transport and shortening travel times for locals commuting to suburban workplaces, schools, universities, local shops and services, and the airport.
The project will reduce both the number of cars on the road as well as train and traffic congestion in the CBD. New stations will be at the centre of well-planned and designed precincts, opening new opportunities for local communities and businesses. SRL complements two other significant upcoming additions to public transport infrastructure, the Melbourne Airport Rail and Melbourne Metro Tunnel.
The first stage includes six new underground stations running from Cheltenham to Burwood. Architectus has developed station layouts and driven precinct and interchange optioneering, tasks that will form a reference design for the remaining project stages.
