The St John’s Paddington site redevelopment is an exemplar of adaptive reuse and was a finalist for the NSW National Trust Awards.
The project incorporates a unique square on Oxford Street which reengages the community with the significant heritage architecture through retail space in the church, commercial office spaces in the Old Manse and a contemporary kiosk servicing the local community.
The public realm of Oxford Street is complemented by high quality residential apartments carefully woven into the heritage character of the Church Hall and the New Manse. The residential component consists of seven contemporary apartments, two town homes inserted into the existing sandstone envelope of the Church Hall and restoration of the New Manse. The design respects the quality of the diverse fabric, through a restrained architectural approach with select materials, composition of new elements and scale of the building forms.
The client and public’s enthusiasm about the outcome is testament to its success.
The Residence
The residential components consists of seven new high-quality apartments on Renny Lane, two town homes inserted into the existing sandstone envelope of the Church Hall and the restoration of the New Manse into a freestanding three-bedroom federation house. The design concept respects the quality of the diverse fabric, through a restrained architectural approach in the use of selected materials, the composition of the new elements and scale of the building forms. The client and public’s enthusiasm about the outcome is testament to its success.
