An important part of the Pemulwuy Precinct in Redfern, this site along the main railway line was developed as student housing in partnership with Scape, taking advantage of its location close to Sydney University, UTS and other institutions in the city.
Themes of community and Country
In line with themes featured across the Pemulwuy precinct – owned by the Aboriginal Housing Company – our team designed the landscape to reflect community and Country.
The native planting is drawn from many regions of Australia, reflecting Redfern’s status as a ‘home away from home’ for people from First Nations communities while in Sydney.
Hard-working rooftop spaces
The Level 21 rooftop is a flexible, much-loved space for social gatherings and events, with sweeping city views, a covered BBQ area and plenty of seating.
The lower level rooftops, which can be seen from residences above, are landscaped with low maintenance grasses and groundcovers that provide a green outlook while enhancing biodiversity in the city, helping to insulate the building, and extending the life of the roof membrane.
A light-filled courtyard
Featuring spaces for study, hobbies, socialising and other activities, the development includes a protected ground floor courtyard with beautiful northern light. It forms a resident entrance and breakout space adjacent to a communal room and end-of-trip facilities.
Long life, low maintenance
As a long-term asset for Scape and a temporary home for students, the management and maintenance of the landscape over time was a critical consideration.
Our Landscape Architecture team worked with Scape’s experienced facilities managers to ensure the design meets their needs now and into the future.
