This facility designed by Architectus distributes aircraft spare parts to locations in and around the Sydney Jet Base, Australia-wide and within the entire Qantas network internationally.
It also makes parts deliveries direct to parked aircraft awaiting departure. Such orders, known as aircraft-on-ground (AOG) orders, require shipment and delivery within 15 minutes from receipt of the order. Given this urgency, redundancy of the materials handling systems and the road connection were essential aspects of the project design.
The receiving and despatch docks are weather protected by a wide canopy and staging areas are sized and located to facilitate efficient, accurate and safe maneuvering of goods. Storage areas are located to minimise travel time and have direct line of sight from the staging areas to ensure high visibility. Each storage type has been selected as being appropriate for the particular requirement of the part. “Fast movers” are low and close to the despatch dock to enable timely response. “Slow movers” are located high and further away.
The Qantas Sydney Distribution Centre was designed to store components in pallet racking, cantilever racking, storage for bulky items and an automated stacker retrieval system for the majority of parts. Additional secure zones were set aside for raw material storage, parts requiring humidity and temperature control, parts suspense areas, quarantine areas and parts for scrapping.
