The Operational Safety Tactics Training Complex for Victoria Police at Craigieburn accommodates a total of 41 employees and up to 120 students undertaking training at any one time.
Architectus collaborated with Victoria Police and various stakeholders in solving a complex planning problem centred around the delivery of a range of training scenarios whilst meeting rigorous occupational health and safety standards.
Contained within a large single building of 8200 m2 in area, the facility includes several flexible teaching spaces that operate as either 25 or 50 person spaces, a 100 person auditorium, a conference room, a virtual firing range, two live firing ranges and a large, fully enclosed 3000 square metre day/night scenario village.
Within this large space are two 250 square metre flexible spaces that can easily be converted to smaller cellular accommodation such as houses or apartments, or a shopping centre, or an open plan office space, to facilitate a large range of training scenarios. All of the teaching and training spaces contain sophisticated IT and audio visual recording technologies for later training analysis.
The methods of teaching and training police staff are being constantly developed, and the design process involved the testing of a number of different spatial iterations within the space planning to assist Victoria Police achieve an outcome that will be fully adaptable for future needs.
