Architectus provided architectural design services for the John Holland led New Intercity Fleet Maintenance Facility (NIFMF) for Transport for NSW. The maintenance facility, required for the New Intercity Fleet (NIF) of trains, is located at Kangy Angy, between Ourimbah and Tuggerah on the North Coast rail line of New South Wales.
NIFMF will deliver the operability and maintainability of a 21st Century facility whilst minimising the impact to the local community through a sensitive approach to the unique ecological habitat of the site and surrounds.
The aspiration for the project is to visually contain the facility, providing a rehabilitated natural setting which nestles within a series of vegetated mounds that reduce the visual impact to surrounding residents while creating an extended wildlife habitat.
To minimise the impact on the community and provide certainty of delivery, the construction methodology has been staged to complete earthworks early, to “protect” the site and have the least impact on the sensitive and recently discovered species in the area.
The facility is designed to sit in and connect to the landscape while providing the internal space for the maintainers to perform at their best. Landscaping and urban design immediately surrounding the facility grounds the building through using earth mounds and extensive planting of indigenous species, and provides a connection for the people working at the facility with the pristine environment that surrounds them.
The maintenance facility includes a highly insulated and controlled naturally ventilated fleet maintenance building, auxiliary workshops, material storage (including flammable liquid), administration, training rooms and associated amenities.
Sustainability initiatives include integration of recycled steel and salvaged timber from site, capture and reuse of stormwater to flush toilets, provision for future PV cells on the roof, maximisation of recycled plastic, and solar hot water.
