As part of Transport for NSW’s Safe Accessible Transport program, Architectus worked with SMEC and Degnan to transform Moss Vale Station into a safer, more accessible transport hub.
The project brings one of New South Wales’ oldest stations into the 21st century, with upgraded facilities that better meet the needs of the entire community.
The renewed station will now accommodate the state’s new Regional Rail Fleet.
Improving accessibility
Commuters and residents enjoy enhanced accessibility from both sides of the station.
Compliant with the Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 and the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, the renewed station is now more accessible for users with disability, limited mobility, parents and carers with prams, and passengers with luggage.
Upgrades include:
- three new lifts
- improvements to the Argyle Street and Lackey Road footbridges
- new accessible pathways, lighting, seating and signage
- formalised parking, including accessibility upgrades around the station precinct
- a new family accessible bathroom
- boarding assistance zones and tactiles on platforms
- upgraded communications equipment and CCTV for improved safety
Heritage-sensitive design
Built in 1867, Moss Vale Station is a focal point for the historic township and a lasting example of Australia’s early rail history. The station features rare early buildings, vice-regal structures, and the remains of an old stabling yard including signal box and embankments.
Architectus worked with Heritage NSW to ensure new interventions were in keeping with the station’s character, using complementary details and finishes.
The updated station features storytelling installations, public art and historical signage created in collaboration with First Nations artists and the local community.
