Architectus is leading the design of a significant new sports and wellbeing precinct for Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC), an historic private school in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. The new sports precinct will replace much-loved, ageing facilities, providing indoor aquatics, indoor sports halls and a dedicated gymnastics centre, plus enhanced wellbeing, training, multipurpose spaces, formal learning, and dedicated workplace. The project will anchor the college’s mission as a leading girls school, developing and nurturing students’ emotional, spiritual, mental and physical wellbeing.

Integration with Landscape and Masterplan

The design includes two large sports buildings framing outdoor courts and play areas, built above a new underground carpark. Set in a steep landscape, the concept reflects a solid structure emerging from the Kew escarpment, with large arched openings that connect to the vibrant activities within and the surrounding landscape.

A feasibility masterplan was developed, considering the sensitive relationship with nearby residential areas. Various design alternatives were explored, ultimately opting for two separate halls for flexibility and to keep existing facilities operational longer. The project also includes landscape upgrades, new entry experiences, and improved outdoor play areas.

Aquatics Centre

The southern building will focus on aquatics, featuring a 50m Olympic-size pool that can be divided into two 25m pools, along with a learn-to-swim pool. Change facilities will accommodate mixed-gender events and include universally accessible spaces. Large arched windows will connect the swimming halls to the landscape.

Indoor Sports Centre

The northern building will cater to indoor sports, featuring a multipurpose hall wall and a dedicated gymnasium. High-level windows will provide views of the escarpment and offer some privacy.

A Sustainable Campus

The precinct will include outdoor multipurpose courts and a 225-space underground carpark with EV charging. The project aims for high thermal performance and will incorporate sustainable features, enhancing the wellbeing of MLC students.
