The security hall at international airports is the main processor of the departures journey for passengers.
Melbourne Airport is experiencing consistent strong growth in international departure numbers, requiring the expansion and reconfiguration of the facility to cope with projected further development and legislative requirements. Ten new x-ray screening lanes have been implemented together with a separate staff and goods screening space, total area of 3400 m2.
Architectus designed the complete refurbishment of the space; with new floors installed and upgrades to wall and ceiling finishes, whilst maintaining a fully operational departures hall over the 18 month construction period.
The new iconic ‘Melbourne Wall’ provides an inviting backdrop for passengers to say farewell to family and friends at the departures entry as they move through to security screening.
The overall look and feel of the refurbished security screening area is one of uncluttered clarity of direction and process. From the entry and ramp area, through ETD and queuing to the screening lanes, the materials, finishes and lighting serve to facilitate a smooth and calm passenger journey experience.
