By 2011 two new A380 capacity carousels were required in Melbourne’s International Terminal to meet inbound capacity demands. This project converted the inbound bagroom made redundant by the T2 Expansion project into an expansion of the reclaim hall with a slab above for future development of the ‘key-hole’ between T2 and T3.

Plant rooms were reduced and reconfigured, a new amenities block was constructed, future proofing for a trolley return lift was made, in-bound out-of gauge relocated and a baggage services counter provided.

The resultant light and bright space with the curvaceous forms of the carousels highlighted in feature light bands is a delightful addition to the reclaim hall. The clarity and legibility of the space defies the complexity of the baggage conveyors, smoke spill systems and access gantries above.

This project was documented as a fully integrated 3D data model with Arup and BCS, the coordination between existing conditions, services and structure could not have been achieved using conventional design tools.
