The Centre for Creativity and Innovation (CCI) at Luther College is a contemporary learning environment designed around a simple idea: students learn best by creating, questioning and exploring.
As Victoria’s first Lutheran school, Luther College has a long tradition of educational excellence and a significant architectural legacy.
Conceived as a home for design thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration, the facility brings together specialised teaching environments, adaptable spaces and informal zones that support a broad range of educational experiences.
Developed through a highly collaborative process, the project reflects a shared commitment to creating an environment that can evolve alongside changing technologies.
Students are encouraged to move seamlessly between disciplines and modes of learning, fostering curiosity, experimentation and creative thinking.
The central presentation stair serves as the heart of the building. It is a gathering place for exchange and connection. More than a circulation tool, it supports presentations, informal interactions and shared experiences, strengthening engagement between students, educators and the wider school community.
Crowned by an elevated roof glazed on all four sides, the central learning area is filled with natural light throughout the day. This light-filled volume illuminates the presentation stair and surrounding informal learning areas, creating an inspiring setting for collaboration, critical thinking and creative investigation.
Strong visual connections to the surrounding landscape and school grounds were integral to the design approach. Extensive glazing brings natural light deep into the learning environments and establishes clear relationships between internal spaces and the broader campus, creating a sense of openness, transparency and connection.
The architectural design response incorporates key principles of connection, scale and rhythm, drawing from the historical context of the site.
This creates a building that both complements and enriches the existing campus.
The building’s massing adopts a two-volume composition, carefully calibrated to respond to the scale of the adjacent Quadrangle buildings while establishing a stronger presence at the public interface.
The CCI builds on Luther College’s distinctive campus shaped by Romberg & Boyd’s landmark mid-century architecture.
A defining feature of the design is the glulam timber façade, inspired by the breezeway columns that characterise Luther College’s architectural language. Rising almost eight metres in height, the finely crafted timber fins create depth, texture and visual identity, reinforcing a sense of continuity across the campus while expressing the building’s modern purpose.
Internally, a warm and durable material palette of exposed aggregate concrete, recycled rubber flooring, native timber panelling and timber-framed windows contributes to a welcoming environment that is both robust and adaptable. These materials support a diverse range of activities while fostering comfort, wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging.
Grounded in its context and focused on the future, the Centre for Creativity and Innovation is a visible expression of Luther College’s commitment to future-focused learning.
By bringing together specialised facilities, flexible learning environments and collaborative spaces, the CCI empowers students to explore ideas, learn through doing and develop the capabilities needed for an evolving world.
