Kangan Institute’s new $55 million Melton campus in Cobblebank is set to become a major landmark in Melbourne’s west and a permanent education hub for this rapidly growing region.
The architecture of the Melton campus is striking and transparent, with the intention of ensuring learning is proudly on display.
At its heart is a large, multipurpose workshop for training in plumbing, carpentry and other trades. It’s complemented by specialist workshops, where electrotechnology, welding, gasfitting and testing skills are taught.
Dedicated training spaces support new and emerging trade specialisations, including prefabricated construction methods, photovoltaic installation and battery technologies.
Eye to the future
Beyond trades, the campus offers purpose-built learning environments for cybersecurity and emerging technologies, such as 3D printing and programming. Flexible general teaching spaces offer opportunities for theory learning and foundations studies.
Once complete, the Melton campus will have capacity for approximately 600 students onsite, with more supported through flexible and blended delivery. A dedicated student hub anchors the campus, bringing together informal learning, student services and a library in a single, social space.
Internal sightlines and a clear wayfinding strategy ensure the campus is easy to navigate. A multi-faith room, family room, reflection room and all-gender bathrooms help make the campus welcoming to all.
First Nations perspectives are embedded in the campus design, with Architectus and Kangan Institute working closely with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation.
The Indigenous Engagement Centre has been designed to support culturally safe learning and create a place of connection for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and community members.
Green goals
Sustainability is a key focus for the campus, which is targeting a 5-Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Design initiatives include:
- A mass timber roof structure, along with low-carbon aluminium and concrete to help lower the carbon footprint of the building
- Water-saving urban design to ensure rainwater is retained and reused onsite
- Landscaping that includes many local and endemic species to help restore the local ecology of the area
- Passive ventilation to the large workshop, which allows the large volume space to remain comfortable without energy-intensive heating and cooling systems.
We led a team of specialist consultants and engineers – including experts in building services, accessibility, acoustics and sustainability – to create the campus’ dynamic, inclusive environment. We also drew on insights from our work with Kangan Institute on the $60 million Health and Community Centre of Excellence in Broadmeadows, which opened in 2025.
Well connected to transport and community infrastructure, the Melton campus occupies a prominent corner site at Hollingsworth Drive and Ferris Road, close to Cobblebank Village, Cobblebank railway station, nearby schools and the future Melton Hospital precinct.
Kangan Institute’s Melton campus will welcome its first students in 2028.
