This contemporary extension of the Gold Coast University Hospital is designed to provide longer-stay patients with greater comfort and a home-like environment that supports healing and wellbeing away from the acute hospital environment.
Seamlessly connected to existing hospital facilities, the 70-bed extension is set to boost the hospital’s capacity and enhance health care delivery in this rapidly growing region.
The new facility offers specialised multi-disciplinary care for older adults and people living with cognitive or behavioural challenges.
A fast-tracked project to meet rising demand
The project is part of the Queensland Government’s Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program aimed at managing increasing demands on health infrastructure in the state.
The facility’s in-patient units will offer the latest care to patients with complex needs in a purpose-designed setting, rather than in acute medical and surgical care. This will take pressure off existing hospitals, including emergency departments.
A convenient, locally appropriate outcome
Our team engaged with staff, community, patients and industry partners to deliver a convenient, locally appropriate outcome. At the same time, we managed challenging site constraints on a fast-tracked program.
Our design solution allows quality care to be delivered on a more personal scale to put patients at ease. It also supports more seamless functional and operational connections between clinical, staff and support zones.
Uplifting natural light and views
The extension’s layout and materiality prioritise the needs of patients. Patient rooms are strategically positioned around the perimeter of the building with access to natural light and leafy views, fostering a connection to nature that enhances recovery.
Large communal lounge areas and outdoor terraces located at two ends of the building are connected by open-ended corridors that encourage social interaction and exercise.
Interiors with a domestic touch
To establish a human-scale and domestic feel, the interiors employ a natural material palette, including warm timber finishes that soften the environment. Built-in seats in the patient suites provide opportunities for family members to gather, further enhancing comfort and support for longer stays.
The reception area is deliberately intimate in scale with softer and more natural finishes, ensuring a welcoming experience in contrast to the grandeur often associated with hospital entrances.
