Gables Public School is designed to make genuine connections to Country, community, and nature by preserving and celebrating all these elements within the school’s learning environment and landscape.
Situated in Gables – part of Sydney’s north-west growth corridor – the project provides the community with a new, large primary school, including three support learning spaces, a new hall for gathering, and core facilities for the school’s administration and library.
Working closely with School Infrastructure, Architectus was responsible for the first phase master plan as well as the concept design for the project’s second phase, with services including the Functional Design Brief, architectural design, and landscape design in collaboration with Oculus.
Inspired by Country
The design response draws inspiration from Country and celebrates the school’s context. It addresses everything from the urban edge to the natural edge of Cataract Creek, connecting students and learning areas to the landscape.
Drawing on the colours of Country, the design also creates a sense of play while reflecting the core use and purpose of each building.
Sustainable design
In the learning hub buildings, windows on the northern and southern facades maximise daylight and ventilation while minimising heat load. Other sustainability initiatives include the incorporation of solar power and provision of rainwater harvesting.
