At Flinders University’s Bedford Park campus, our Interiors team has transformed a once-quiet 1960s library wing into a visible, high‑energy home for innovation and entrepreneurship.

The expanded New Venture Institute (NVI) and reimagined Flinders Connect now share a single, vibrant destination that brings students, staff and industry together.

Innovation on display

NVI is a community of deep thinkers and makers, interested in how unconventional environments can spark imaginative, innovative and unexpected ideas.

Architectus’ design makes this culture visible, placing innovation at the heart of the library experience and offering a dynamic front door for students, staff, industry partners and visitors.

Design concept: The Nucleus

Our Interiors team centred the design response on the idea of disruption, expressed through a bold central form known as “The Nucleus”.

Inserted as a deliberate “foreign object” within the existing library interior, The Nucleus acts as a glowing beacon that draws people in and showcases the range of activity occurring inside.

Entering The Nucleus feels like a shift into another world, an iridescent, sculptural space conceived as a highly flexible think tank.

Inside, students configure modular cubes to build their own environment, supporting sessions such as dynamic pitches, tech showcases, ‘Test Drive Tuesday’ and round‑table discussions.

A connected ecosystem of spaces

Radiating from The Nucleus, a series of interconnected zones support different modes of learning, collaboration and engagement. These include:

  • Collaborative workplace areas
  • A learning lounge
  • A café and informal meeting points
  • Bookable meeting rooms
  • Flinders Connect student services

These spaces create an agile ecosystem for student start‑ups, small businesses and industry partners, encouraging interaction, mentoring and knowledge exchange.

Opening the library to campus

The project also upgraded the library’s exterior, opening up the building’s northern façade with new glazing. Generous, occupiable window boxes now extend learning and social spaces to the edge of the building, increasing natural light, views to campus and glimpses into the NVI.

The result is a vibrant destination that supports innovation, entrepreneurial thinking and everyday collaboration across the Flinders University community.
